THESE FOUR WOMEN RECREATED A PHOTO 52 YEARS AFTER THEIR FIRST VACATION WITHOUT THEIR PARENTS IN TORQUAY, ENGLAND.
In 1972, four teenage girls from Yorkshire went on their first holiday without their parents to Torquay, known as the English Riviera. They took a special photo during the trip, linking arms in colorful outfits as they walked along the promenade.
Now, 52 years later, the same four friends—Marion, Susan, Mary, and Carol—decided to recreate that photo in the same place. They traveled 322 miles to Torquay, found similar clothes from the 1970s, and took a new version of the picture while remembering how their friendship has lasted over the years.
Back in 1972, the girls, then 17, enjoyed a week of freedom, drinking cider and exploring the seaside. They stayed in a caravan and loved the simple joys, like a small outdoor swimming pool. A photographer on the promenade had asked them to link arms for the original photo, which they all kept as a memory.
Recreating the photo in 2024 came with challenges. The white hotel in the background of the original picture was gone, and finding similar outfits required searching through charity shops and online stores. Despite some clothes being a tight fit, they had fun posing and laughing together.
Now in their late 60s, the friends have stayed close. Three still live in Halifax, while Carol spends time between Spain and Calderdale. They keep in touch daily through messages and always support each other through life’s ups and downs.
Their story has touched many hearts, with people loving their enduring friendship. As they approach their 70th birthdays, the group is already planning their next adventure—a trip to Blackpool.
