I WENT TO PICK UP MY WIFE AND NEWBORN TWINS FROM THE HOSPITAL — I ONLY FOUND THE BABIES AND A NOTE.

I can’t explain the excitement I felt as I drove to the hospital to bring Suzie and our newborn twin daughters home. I had spent the past few days decorating the nursery, cooking a big family dinner, and planning the perfect welcome. I even picked up balloons on the way. But when I arrived, my excitement turned into confusion.

Suzie wasn’t there. I just found our two sleeping daughters and a note.

My hands shook as I unfolded it: “Goodbye. Take care of them. Ask your mother WHY she did this to me.”

I froze, rereading it over and over. What the hell did this mean? Where was Suzie?

I asked the nurse, my voice trembling. “Where’s my wife?”

“She checked out this morning,” the nurse said hesitantly. “She said you knew.”

Knew? I had no clue. I drove home with the twins, my mind racing, replaying every moment of Suzie’s pregnancy. She seemed happy — or was I blind?

When I got home, my mom was there, smiling and holding a casserole. “Oh, let me see my grandbabies!”

I pulled back. “Not yet, Mom. What did you do to Suzie?”

My mother’s smile faded, her eyes widening with confusion and concern. “What are you talking about, honey?”

I thrust the note at her, my hands still shaking. She took it, her brow furrowing as she read. Silence enveloped the room, heavy and suffocating, as she slowly looked up, her expression unreadable.

“I… I don’t understand this. What does she mean? I’ve always loved Suzie like my own daughter,” she stammered, her voice trembling.

I sank into a chair, the twins cradled in each arm, feeling a mix of betrayal and desperation. “She left, Mom. She left and said it was because of what you did to her. I need to know what happened.”

Mom sat down beside me, taking a deep breath. “I didn’t do anything to hurt her, I swear. The only thing—I don’t know if it’s even relevant—is that I had a talk with her about your father.”

“My father?” I frowned, confused. Dad had passed away years ago, before I’d even met Suzie.

“Yes,” Mom continued, hesitantly. “Your father wasn’t… exactly the man we thought he was. Before he died, I found out he had another family—a wife and a child.”

The room seemed to spin as I processed her words. “You’re saying I have a half-sibling out there? What does this have to do with Suzie?”

Mom sighed, her hands wringing. “When Suzie got pregnant, I worried. I was scared history might repeat itself. I didn’t want you to end up like your father, tempted… I told her about your father’s mistakes, hoping it would strengthen your bond.”

“But why would that make her leave?” I asked, bewildered.

“I… I might have suggested she be vigilant, to ensure you were always open with her. Maybe she took it the wrong way, thought there were secrets between you two.”

Guilt and realization washed over me. Had Suzie felt trapped, questioned by her own insecurities or by a misplaced warning from Mom? Had she felt so overwhelmed by the fear of betrayal that she decided to flee?
